Welcome back to a new semester!
August is here with lots of new students from near and far. KTH remains Sweden's most
sought-after university in our field. And the proportion of women has increased to 34 per cent in the second selection round of national applicants.
In her blog post, Eva Björndal, Head of the ITM School's Office, welcomes you back after the summer and
recognises the efforts behind a successful launch. She also outlines the next steps in following up the ITM School's operational plan.

A chance to make a difference at ITM
This autumn, there will be election for new members to the Faculty Board. Hello,
Viktoria Martin, chair of the nomination committee for the ITM Faculty Board.
What kind of people are you looking for as new board members? “We are looking for people
who are passionate about academic collegiality and see this as an opportunity
to help lead and develop ITM’s education, research and collaboration with
society at large. We are looking for people who want to take an active role and
represent their department. The role also involves building links with other
units and contributing to the development of ITM as a whole.”
What will the new board be working
on?
“Looking ahead, there are great
opportunities to help shape ITM’s priorities and future development. In
particular, active participation in ITM’s reform agenda, the school’s strategic
development plan, stronger experimental environments and the education of the
future will be key building blocks for an excellent ITM.”

Rubble from war can become a resource
We see it in news reports from war zones and disaster areas: mountains of debris where homes, schools and hospitals once stood. The rubble is often treated as waste. Behind the scenes: how ITM prepares for the unexpected
How does
ITM prepare for incidents such as cyberattacks, accidents or other crises?
Behind the scenes, a local crisis management group regularly carries out
exercises, reviews real-life incidents and develops routines to ensure a swift
response when needed. We sat in on one of the group's meetings.

Cash is back – but is it too late?
Cash is making a comeback in Sweden. New legislation introduced in July requires grocery stores and pharmacies to accept cash again, while banks must take greater responsibility for cash services.
The topic has kept researcher Niklas Arvidsson busy, with media interviews, a seminar and a radio appearance.
"Many of the measures are being introduced too late," he says. "We have already moved to electronic payment services, and there is no turning back the clock."

50 years of dedication: Thank you, Lasse!
Last week, Lars Wingård was celebrated for soon retiring after 50 years at KTH. He first joined KTH as a student on 16 August 1976 and has remained loyal ever since.
“On 31 August, I will officially retire, but I won’t be leaving KTH completely", he says. "I’ll continue to work occasionally during the coming academic year. I was there as a student for KTH’s 150th anniversary, so I suppose I should keep one foot in the door for the 200th anniversary too!”

Migration of email accounts
This autumn, all KTH email accounts will be migrated from local servers to the cloud-based Exchange Online platform. Around 50,000 accounts will be moved, including room and equipment booking accounts and functional mailboxes.
The move will introduce new features and integrations with Microsoft and third-party services, including making calendars available in Teams. It will also improve availability, operational reliability and information security, reduce technical debt, and simplify administration. Do you share links on OneDrive without login?
For security reasons, KTH has placed a restriction of 180 days on shared links that are publicly available without login. After 180 days have passed, the link must be distributed again.
