The Cost and Importance of Coordination
Congratulations to KTH, and to the other Swedish universities that have secured new resources through the Strategic Research Areas initiative. For SCI, this is especially meaningful through our engagement in quantum technology and polar research. The emerging VR-Vinnova excellence cluster initiatives point in a similar direction.
At the same time, this brings up an issue that is not always discussed openly: coordination has a cost. Academic freedom is fundamental to research, but major strategic initiatives also depend on something more. They need cooperation across boundaries, a willingness to build strong environments together, and at times a readiness to contribute beyond one’s own immediate priorities. As new alliances begin to take shape, this feels particularly timely.

15 April marks Wear Your Uniform to Work Day. The Swedish Armed Forces are behind this initiative, which gives Home Guard soldiers in Sweden the opportunity to wear their uniform at their civilian workplace on that day. Please therefore do not be surprised if, on 15 April, you see your colleague in uniform at KTH.
