Three new units at IPU
The Department of Production Engineering (IPU) has
reorganised into three subject-based units to strengthen collaboration and
create new opportunities following the move to Stockholm.
“Now that
we are all together, we want to avoid the previous units getting stuck in their
silos. There are many similarities and good reasons to think differently,” says
Magnus Wiktorsson, Head of Department at IPU.

Pernilla Ulfvengren, Deputy Head of First and Second Cycle Education at ITM.
| What makes a good engineer?…and have we actually talked enough about engineering competence? That’s what Pernilla Ulfvengren reflects on in her latest blog post. She also dares to step out onto thin ice and question why the mathematics block remains unchanged, year after year. Maybe it’s time to rethink how we apply mathematics – for the sake of quality?

Organisational structure: a critical issue on independence
KTH’s President Anders shares his view on the upcoming inquiry that Kerstin Jacobsson will lead, focusing on academic freedom and institutional autonomy.
“This is a positive step. The inquiry has two parts, both grounded in the concept of independence. However, great freedom comes with great responsibility.” Anders Söderholm's blog post

Reminder: The social role of researchers in times of conflict Collaboration is inscribed as one of the university's three tasks, and the discussion about the relevance of research is lively. But we rarely talk about when and if it is a mandatory requirement. When an issue that research has interested in becomes political and controversial, should researchers then clarify the discussion? Or are there, on the contrary, limits to a researcher's social engagement? On February 17, Folke Tersman, professor of practical philosophy at Uppsala University and deputy CEO of the Institute for Futures Studies, will open KTH's collegial forum with a presentation of different perspectives and considerations in relation to our social role.
