Incoming students 2027: SCI application trends, stability, and what AI might change
Each spring, the first-choice application numbers give us an early signal about the next cohort of students. They are not the whole story - final admissions depend on capacity, eligibility, selection groups and final choices - but they are a useful indicator of attractiveness and long-term positioning.
SCI: a stable portfolio, with a clear upward signal in two programmes. A common question right now is whether the rapid spread of AI is already reshaping how young people choose what to study. Photo: David Callahan | Twisting atom thin materials reveals new way to save computing energyA recent study, published in Nano Letters, shows a new and potentially more energy efficient way to transmit information inside electronic systems, including computers and phones, without relying on electric currents or external magnetic fields.
Today’s electronics transmit information by moving electrons through circuits, where ones and zeros are represented by high or low electrical signals. This movement of electrical charge generates heat, causing energy loss and limiting how much devices can be miniaturized and improved.
Researchers at KTH and international collaborators demonstrate that twisting two layers of certain atom thin magnetic materials allows magnetic signals, known as altermagnetic magnons, to carry information instead of electrical currents. Read the article | | | Publish in Open Research Europe
From autumn 2026 publishing in Open Research Europe (ORE) is open for all Swedish researchers. Up to now it has been open only for research funded by EU. Please contact KTH Library if you have any questions.

AI and digital competence in schools
|
Welcome to the first webinar in a free training series on AI, digitalisation and the future of learning, organised by KTH and the Swedish Internet Foundation.
In this first session, you will meet researchers, teachers and experts who take a closer look at questions related to AI and source criticism. You will gain insights into how students actually use AI today, as well as concrete examples of how you can work with these issues in the classroom.
The webinar will be held in Swedish.

Why Does AI Work? A Lecture on the Geometry Behind the Technology Why is AI able to do things we once thought were impossible, while other seemingly simple problems remain difficult?
Welcome to an open lecture with Kathlén Kohn, Associate Professor of Mathematics. Kathlén will talk about how we can understand AI through the world of mathematics: geometry and algebra. By looking at the “shape” of the technology, we can form a clearer and more logical picture of how deep learning actually works and what strengths different AI models have.
Although AI and deep learning are now present throughout society, we still do not fully understand why the technology works as well as it does. Development is moving at great speed, but the theory behind it does not always keep pace.

Keynote:
Andrea Pető, professor at the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University, Vienna, Austria. The webinar is arranged by the SAR Sweden network and the CASI-project. Read more and register | | |
