Welcome back to campus!
I hope you have all had a chance to
enjoy the summer, whether on vacation, attending conferences, conducting
research, or simply taking some time to recharge. A particularly warm welcome
to all our new students, graduate students and faculty who are joining SCI this
autumn!
It is especially gratifying to welcome our students at a time when several of
our programmes continue to be among the most attractive in the country, with
some of the highest admission scores in Sweden. This is something we can be
proud of, and also a reminder of our responsibility to provide our students
with an education that matches their high expectations and ambitions. Our first School Faculty Breakfast of the semester will take
place on 4 September. Together with our PhD student representatives, we
will follow up on the workshops on inclusion and advising held across our
departments. It will be an opportunity to reflect on what emerged from these
discussions, share experiences across the School, and consider concrete actions
for the future. I hope to see many of you there. This autumn also brings an important moment for our faculty community: the
election of a new School Faculty Board. The Board has an important
role in the collegial governance and future development of the School, and its
strength depends on the engagement of our faculty. I encourage you to
take part in the process, and to consider nominating colleagues, or standing
for election yourself.
I look forward to seeing you all again and to an engaging and productive autumn

SCI continues to strengthen doctoral education
Doctoral education at SCI has undergone several changes in recent years, with the aim of making processes clearer, more transparent and more consistent for both doctoral students and supervisors. Guidelines have been developed and consolidated, information has become easier to find, and new requirements have been introduced in areas such as AI use in theses. Jens Fransson, Acting Director of Third-Cycle Education at SCI, explains the thinking behind the changes, what they mean in practice and why long-term quality and consistency have been central to the work. He also looks ahead to the next areas for development, including the range of doctoral courses and a more common approach to AI across KTH.

Migration of email accounts
This autumn, all KTH email accounts will be migrated from local servers to the cloud-based Exchange Online platform. Around 50,000 accounts will be moved, including room and equipment booking accounts and functional mailboxes.
The move will introduce new features and integrations with Microsoft and third-party services, including making calendars available in Teams. It will also improve availability, operational reliability and information security, reduce technical debt, and simplify administration. Dell'Orto Aims to Make Cycling Safer for Children
Transporting children by bike is often seen as a sustainable and healthy way to travel. But how are young children affected by the vibrations caused by uneven road surfaces? This is the question KTH researcher Gabriele Dell'Orto is seeking to answer. The aim is to generate knowledge that can contribute to safer products and safer travel for the youngest passengers.

New design for flat optical fiber transforms glass into an ultra sensitive platform
Optical fiber has already transformed the modern world. Research now suggests it could do even more. A new flat fiber fabrication technique produces a high fidelity sensor for a wide range of applications, from batteries to bridges, according to a recently-published study.
“This is not just a different looking fiber,” KTH researcher Pawel Maniewski says. “It is a new design space for optical fiber.”
