The easier it becomes to produce an answer, the more important it becomes to know how to judge the answer

The PISA 2025 results released this week make uncomfortable reading. At the same time, AI is rapidly changing how our students learn and how we teach and conduct research. I think we need to consider these two developments together. As AI makes it increasingly easy to produce answers, the ability to judge those answers becomes increasingly important. 

And this raises questions that go beyond AI literacy: What does it mean to become scientifically competent in the AI generation? What should students and doctoral students still learn through their own struggle? And how does the role of the professor change?

The AI generation will need more scientific competence, not less.

Strong interest in SCI’s programmes

SCI’s four Master of Science in Engineering programmes are attracting large numbers of applicants and are also among the programmes in Sweden with the toughest competition for places. Engineering Physics tops the list of Swedish Master of Science in Engineering programmes with the highest admission scores for the third year in a row. At the same time, interest in Vehicle Engineering has increased significantly.

“It is very encouraging to see such strong interest in our programmes. The fact that so many students apply to our broad programmes suggests that they are seen as relevant and reliable educational choices for a rapidly changing labour market,” says Gunnar Tibert, Director of First and Second Cycle Education at SCI.

AI – the researchers’ new colleague in the lab

Can a laboratory learn to make discoveries on its own? That question lies at the heart of Polaris, a new initiative at KTH in which researchers are building an autonomous research environment to develop the sustainable materials of the future. The ambition is to give artificial intelligence an active role in the research process – from planning experiments to analysing results and suggesting the next steps.

“We hope Polaris will become a national platform where we can develop the polymers and soft materials of the future much faster and more systematically than we can today,” says Daniel Söderberg, Professor of Fibre Processes, who leads the initiative with Fredrik Lundell, Professor of Experimental Fluid Mechanics.

Getting beginners to think in math

How do you get first-year students on board when the first maths course of the autumn gets underway? We joined Lars Filipsson, Associate Professor in Mathematics, for the opening lecture of the semester.

After more than 25 years of teaching, he has been named Teacher of the Year and received KTH’s Pedagogical Prize. Even so, he feels a certain nervous excitement ahead of today’s lecture. “It’s a little nerve-racking, but it always feels good once you get started. This really is the most enjoyable part of the job,” he says.
